Description
Most species can be found at high latitudes, appearing on sand or warm soils. The species have a characteristic strip-like shape, the branches of which are channeled or twisted into tubes ending in flattened slits with bordered edges. The most famous is the Iceland moss. It grows on acidic as well as neutral and basic soils. It can grow in partial shade or in areas without shade. It prefers a moist base. Iceland moss has been used since ancient times as a cough medicine, and in European folk medicine it is also used as a medicine against cancer. It has strong antibiotic and demulcent action.
