Common barberry Berberis vulgaris

Common barberry

Features

Very poisonous plant, except for the fruits that are sometimes harvested for jam (they contain a lot of vitamin C). If we touch the anthers, they bend sharply towards the fist. This mechanism is one of the fastest movements (taxis) in the plant world and was developed as a result of improved pollen transmission to the pollinator. Decorated bush.

The flowers are yellow, 4–6 millimetres across, produced on 3–6 centimetres long panicles in late spring. The fruit is an oblong red berry 7–10 millimetres long and 3–5 millimetres broad, ripening in late summer or autumn; they are edible but sour.
