A popular ornamental plant that blooms fairly early. It is a very common species in Slovenia. Even today, an important spice is obtained from the necks of the pistils of saffron crocus (Crocus sativus), which has been extremely valued in the past but also quite expensive, hence the term "expensive as saffron".
