Description

The crown is ovoid, often resembling deciduous trees in age. The bark is greyish green in youth and smooth until 20 or 50 years of age. Then it cracks and becomes brownish gray. The shoots are thin, already three years old, barely about 3 mm thick, grayish green and elastic. The needles are thin, bright, bluish green, 6 to 14 cm long. The tufts of needles are mostly facing upwards. The male flowers are reddish yellow and oval. From female inflorescences develop cones that are mature up to 15 cm long and up to 4 cm wide. They ripen in August or September and open immediately. Its range stretches from Newfoundland, through southeastern Canada and the Great Lakes to northern Georgia in the United States. It is a fast-growing species and surpasses spruce and European red pine in this respect. It also reaches its largest dimensions in Europe and reaches the age of 200 to 300 years. It reaches maturity relatively early, between the ages of 5 and 10, but richer yields follow only after the age of 20. It is a semi-shady species. It thrives in various, especially cold and quite humid sites.
