Description

The trunk is straight and covered with brown-gray strongly cracked bark. The crawn of the tree is round and consists of branches full of long thorns. The leaves are light green and pinnately divided into smaller leaflets. The leaves are arranged alternately on reddish-brown young twigs and consist of 7 to 20 small leaflets with a smooth leaf margin. At the base of the stalk, they drive two thorns from a branch, which are in fact transformed stalks. The flowers of black locust are white and grouped in large clustered inflorescences full of honey. The flowers are edible and attract many insects with a strong scent during flowering. The fertilized flowers become drooping leathery pods, full of seeds (4 to 10 bean-like seeds). Black locust does not like stone substrates and sites with stagnant water or high groundwater. It needs a lot of light for development, which is why it most often appears on forest slopes or clearings. It is sensitive to wind, snow and low temperatures.
