Description
It has a flat trunk covered with a gray to grayish green bark that is cracked in adult trees. The leaves are ovate or elliptical and blunt or sparsely serrated. Young leaves are triangular or palmately divided. The top is dark green and the bottom is gray.
Male flowers are long, cylindrical and drooping catkins with 7 to 10 anthers and initially purple and later yellow anthers, while females are shorter and have red furrows. Female glabrous fruits develop from female flowers.
It is found in Central and Southern Europe, as far as West Asia and North Africa. The wood is soft and is used to make furniture and crates.
